Lawyer Nguyễn Hữu Thọ was born in Long Phú village, Long Hưng Hạ canton, Trung Quận district, Chợ Lớn province (now in Bến Lức town, Bến Lức district, Long An province) In childhood, he studied at Long Mỹ Primary School, Rạch Giá. At 11 years old, he went to French to study. In 1932, he graduated with a Bachelos degree in Law at Aix en Provence University of Law and Literature. In May 1933, he left France for homeland. He applied for a job as an apprentice lawyer at democratic and progressive French lawyer's office in Cochin China. In 1947, he participated in the patriotic movement of intellectuals in Sài Gòn - Chợ Lớn. In 1948, he jointed the Liên Việt Front and one-year later, on October 16, 1949, he was admitted into the Indochinese Communist Party. At the first Congress of the South Vietnam National Liberation Front (SVNLF), he was entrusted the important position as Chairman of the SVNLF Central Committee. In June 1969, the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam was established, he was elected its Advisory Council Chairman. In this position, he always held aloft the banner of national great unity, took advantage of the sympathy and support of the progressive world people, together with the entire Party and people contributing greatly to bring the struggle for national liberation and unification to final victory. After the complete victory of anti-American resistance war for national salvation and national unification, Lawyer Nguyễn Hữu Thọ was elected by our Party, State and people to hold many importance positions: State Vice-President (April 1976), Acting State President (April 1980), Chairman of the National Assembly (July 1981) and Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front (1988). He continued to dedicate his life to the Party and people to the final days of his life. In order to acknowledge his merits & contributions to the Vietnamese Revolution, on the 10th of July 2010, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) issues the stampset: “Birth Centenary of Nguyễn Hữu Thọ (10/7/1910 - 24/12/1996)” consisting of 01 value of 2,000d. |
